An honest comparison
Red iron vs. pole barn
We build both, so we don’t need to talk you into either one. Here’s how they stack up and how to tell which one is right for your project.
Side by side
How they compare
| Feature | Red Iron | Pole Barn |
|---|---|---|
| Frame | Structural steel I-beam columns & rafters, bolted together | Pressure-treated wood posts with engineered wood trusses |
| Typical widths | 30′ to 100′+ clear span | 24′ to 80′ clear span |
| Eave heights | 10′ to 30′+ | 8′ to 20′ |
| Foundation | Concrete slab or piers with anchor bolts (required) | Posts set in the ground; slab optional |
| Up-front cost | Higher. You pay for commercial-grade steel. | Lower. Usually the best cost per square foot. |
| Build speed | Foundation must be poured and cured first | Fast. No slab to wait on. |
| Rot & termites | Not a concern. It’s steel. | Treated posts resist both; wood still needs care |
| Heavy loads | Built for cranes, mezzanines & heavy equipment | Great for storage, ag & standard shop use |
| Finishing inside | Excellent for commercial & big-bay layouts | Wood framing makes insulating & finishing easy |
| Look | Clean, modern commercial profile | Classic Southern barn — porches & cupolas welcome |
| Delivery | Quoted separately, priced by distance | Quoted separately, priced by distance |
Typical ranges. Your building is engineered to your exact size, loads, and site.
Quick gut check
Which one fits your project?
Red Iron
Choose red iron if…
- You need spans wider than about 80′ with no interior posts
- You want tall walls for lifts, cranes, RVs, or aircraft
- It’s a commercial building or needs to meet commercial code
- You’re putting in a concrete slab anyway
- You want zero wood in the structure, ever
Choose a pole barn if…
- Getting the most square footage for your budget comes first
- You don’t want to pour a full slab (or not yet)
- It’s for horses, hay, livestock, or equipment
- You want porches, lean-tos, or that classic barn look
- You plan to insulate and finish the inside yourself

Let us price both
Plenty of projects, especially barndominiums and big shops, could go either way. Tell us what you’re building and we’ll quote it as red iron and as a pole barn so you can compare real numbers.
